Preface:

Inlife,weoftenencounteropponents.Theymaybecompetitorsinsportsorbusiness,enemiesinwarorpolitics,orevenjustsomeonewedon'tgetalongwith.Butwhathappenswhenourbiggestfoeisourselves?Whenself-doubtcreepsinandhindersusfromreachingourfullpotential?Thisisthestoryofoneman'sbattleagainsthisowninnerdemons.

Paragraph1:

Maxwasasuccessfulbusinessman,admiredbyhispeersandenviedbyhiscompetitors.Hehadbuiltathrivingcompanyfromscratchandhadareputationforbeingashrewdnegotiatorandavisionaryleader.Butbeneaththesurface,Maxwasstrugglingwithsomethingmuchdarkerthananyexternaladversary.Hewasplaguedbyself-doubt,avoiceinsidehisheadthatwhisperedhewasn'tgoodenough,smartenough,ordeservingofhissuccess.

Maxhadalwaysbeenanoverachiever,driventoprovehimselftoothersandtohimself.Hehadgrownupinahouseholdwheresuccesswasthemeasureofworth,andfailurewasnotanoption.Hehadworkedhardtogetwherehewas,sacrificingsleep,relationships,andsometimesevenhisownhealth.Butnomatterhowmanyaccoladeshereceivedorhowmuchmoneyhemade,thevoiceofself-doubtneverwentaway.

Paragraph3:

Itbegantoaffecthiswork.Maxstartedsecond-guessinghisdecisions,hesitatingwhenheshouldhavebeendecisive,anddoubtinghisownabilities.Hewouldspendhoursanalyzingeveryaspectofadeal,lookingforflawsandweaknessesthatweren'tthere.Hebecameparalyzedbythefearoffailure,afraidtotakerisksortrynewthings.

ThetherapistlistenedpatientlyasMaxpouredouthisheart.Hetalkedabouthischildhood,hiscareer,hisfearsandhisfailures.Thetherapistnodded,scribblingnotesonapadofpaper.

Afterseveralsessions,thetherapistsuggestedsomethingradical."Whatif,"shesaid,"thevoiceinyourheadisn'tyourenemy?Whatifit'stryingtoprotectyou?"

Maxwastakenaback.Protecthim?Thevoicethathadcausedhimsomuchpainandmisery?Butthetherapistexplainedthatsometimes,oursubconsciousmindtriestowarnusofdanger,evenifthatdangerisjustthepossibilityoffailureorrejection.Thevoiceofself-doubtwasn'ttryingtosabotageMax,itwastryingtokeephimsafe.

Maxalsolearnedtobekindertohimself.Hestartedpracticingself-compassion,acknowledgingthathewasonlyhumanandthateveryonemakesmistakes.Hewouldremindhimselfthathewasdoingthebesthecould,andthatwasenough.

Itwasn'teasy,butovertimeMaxbegantofeelmoreconfidentandsecure.Hemadeaconsciousefforttotakerisksandtrynewthings,knowingthatfailurewasjustapartoftheprocess.Hesurroundedhimselfwithsupportivefriendsandfamilywhobelievedinhim.

Max'sbusinessbegantothriveonceagain.Hiscolleaguesnoticedthechangeinhim,howheseemedmorerelaxedandsureofhimself.Theyrespectedhimforhisvulnerabilityandhiswillingnesstoadmithisstruggles.
